How it started
Like many expectant parents, I thought potty learning started somewhere between two and three years old. Then, shortly after giving birth, I discovered Elimination Communication (EC).
The idea that babies might be able to communicate their toileting needs long before traditional potty training fascinated me. At the same time, it felt completely familiar. I grew up in Soviet-era Ukraine, where disposable diapers were still a luxury and much of what we now call EC was simply part of everyday life.
But the more I delved into the practice—and added two international moves into the mix—the more overwhelmed I became. There was an endless amount of information online, and it wasn't always clear where to start or what would actually work for our family.
What began as curiosity gradually became one of the most rewarding parts of our parenting journey. Not because we caught every pee, or because our daughter became potty-independent earlier than average, but because it taught me to pay attention in a completely different way. EC helped me see that babies communicate far more than we often give them credit for.
Today, I help families explore that same possibility in a way that feels practical, flexible, and realistic for modern life.
THE APPROACH
EC can look very different from one household to the next. My role isn't to tell you what you should do. It's to help you cut through the noise, understand what's already happening, recognise your child's signals, and find an approach that fits your family's values, routines, and goals.
Whether your goal is reducing diaper waste, navigating potty resistance, preparing for daycare, or simply understanding your child a little better, we'll work with where you are.
How I can help
Whether you're expecting your first baby, navigating the newborn months, introducing a potty to an older baby, or trying to make sense of toddler potty learning, you're not alone.
Many of the families I work with arrive with the same questions I once had.
-
You don't need to change everything overnight. Most families begin by observing, offering the potty at a few natural transition times, and building awareness from there.
-
The first few weeks can be a wonderful time to begin. Many newborns still communicate discomfort very clearly and haven't yet learned to ignore the sensation of needing to go.
That said, it's never too late to start.
Whether your baby is 2 weeks, 6 months, or 18 months old and over, there are ways to build awareness and reduce diaper dependency. The approach can be adjusted depending on age and your family situation.
For older toddlers, a more traditional potty learning approach may be more appropriate than an EC practice, but many of the same principles still apply.
-
Probably more than you think. EC isn't about catching every pee. It's about communication, observation, and gradually learning what works for your family.
-
Many families successfully practise EC at home while using diapers or a more conventional approach at daycare. Consistency helps, but perfection isn't required.
-
Potty pauses are common and often linked to developmental leaps, changes in routine, illness, travel, or a desire for autonomy. More often than not, they're temporary and can be worked through with some troubleshooting.
